As with most Eastern Kentucky communities, the main industry in Hazard is coal mining, but the city is also now focusing on attracting new industries and expanding the area’s timber harvesting and other lumber-related industries. Heart care in Eastern Kentucky is now being delivered at an all-new level of medical excellence, thanks to the new partnership between the ARH Heart Institute in Hazard and Lexington’s Saint Joseph Heart Institute-the state's leading heart hospital.

The Medical Center also features a state-of the-art cancer treatment center which includes cutting edge radiation therapy technology and is also affiliated with UK Health Care’s Markey Cancer Center, which has been heralded by the U.S. News & World Report as one of the best hospitals in the U.S. for the treatment of cancer. As part of the UK Markey Cancer Center Affiliate Network, the ARH Cancer Center provides first-line cancer care in the community setting. The partnership also allows patients at network affiliate locations like the ARH Cancer Center to participate in clinical studies
